Building Department
Responsibilities
The structural integrity of buildings and the safety of building occupants are paramount concerns of the Building Department. In overseeing building activity, this department issues permits for:
- Additions
- Alterations
- Decks
- Driveways
- Fences
- Garages
- Patios
- Pools
- Remodeling
- Renovations
- Residential and commercial new construction
- Right-of-way construction
- Roofs
- Sheds
- Storage buildings
- Temporary structures
Division Approvals
These permits are generally issued after approvals from the appropriate:
- Engineering
- Fire Protection Districts
- Homer Township Highway Department
- Inspectors
- Planning and zoning
- Will County Health Department
Project Inspections
The department's staff members conduct inspections throughout and at the end of construction, and upon successful completion of certain building projects the department issues certificates of occupancy.
Day-to-Day Tasks
As required, the Building Department responds to a variety of general inquiries about:
- Building permits
- Conducts initial review and acceptance of all permit applications and appeals
- Issues new street addresses
- Ordinance interpretation
- Registers contractors
