The Village of Homer Glen conducted an informational meeting regarding the proposed Fiddyment Creek Sanitary Sewer project on March 31st.  Village staff have been working with representatives from the Forest Preserve District of Will County and the McDonough Associates Inc., (MAI) engineering firm to determine the best route for the sewer extension between Cedar and Gougar Roads. Early last year MAI completed a feasibility study which indicated that the sewer could be extended along the creek bed of Fiddyment Creek. As part of a preliminary engineering study several alternate routes were analyzed taking into consideration environmental studies prepared by the Forest Preserve District and MAI.  The studies included inventories of wildlife and bird habitats, archeological studies and a tree inventory. The preliminary engineering report which will be available for review by March 3, 2010.  Copies will be available at the Village Hall, Forest Preserve District of Will County, Homer Township Library and on this Village's website.

The report provides information on the proposed multi-use trail alignment.  As part of the agreement between the Village and the Forest Preserve District, the village will be constructing a multi-use trail that will generally follow the sewer alignment.  Mayor Jim Daley commented that this provided a win-win scenario for both the village and the Forest Preserve.  "The sewer extension provides the economic stimulus for commercial development along one of our major commercial corridors and as part of the restoration requirements for the sewer we will be constructing approximately 3 miles of trail.  This trail will provide access to the 275 acre Forest Preserve as well as provide a link between the Village's trail system and the future I-355 trail."  Daley credited the project to the intergovernmental cooperation with the Forest Preserve District.  "I am very thankful to the leadership of Cory Singer which facilitated the annexation of the Forest Preserve District property and planning for the sewer and trail," stated Daley.

The Mayor further stated that the project makes for a perfect "shovel ready" project for the anticipated second round of ARRA stimulus funding.  "We hope to move forward quickly with phase II of the sewer study so that we can be in a good position for possible stimulus funding.  We want to stay ahead of the curve with this project so that we can make sure we capture commercial development as the economy recovers."
