The Village of Homer Glen and Homer Township will host a free Earth Day-Arbor Day celebration on Saturday, May 22, with plenty of activities planned for families.

The event, planned to be held from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the historic Konow Farm, 16849 S. Cedar Road, will include speakers, demonstrations, exhibits, food and more.

Children will be able to meet "H.G. the Talking Tree," while Jim Nesci will entertain with his "Cold Blooded Creatures" including "Bubba" the alligator. Konow's farm animal friends will join in on the fun, too, and Pilcher Park Nature Center volunteers will offer information about snakes and "Nemo," a rescued red tail hawk. Appearances will also be made by the Green Valley Dog Drivers, who will demonstrate how they train huskies for dog sledding competitions such as the Iditarod.

Boy Scout Troop 63 will exhibit camping techniques that "Leave No Trace Behind." Or enjoy a gentle breeze and watch the demonstrations of sport kites and large inflatable kites by members of the Chicago Kite Flying Team. A hay wagon will take guests across the entire festival.

Demonstrations and exhibits pertaining to energy efficient lighting, geothermal, wind and solar power will educate. Landscape, yard care and safe cleaning methods will also be featured. And the Illinois Arborist Association will speak about proper planting and pruning methods, with master gardeners on hand to answer questions.

Also, antique cars will be on display at the event, which will celebrate Homer Glen's appreciation for preserving the past. The grand opening of the Township's Tilsy Barn is also scheduled at the event, at 3:45 p.m.

Those in attendance will receive free light bulbs, test kits for well water and stickers, while rain barrels will be sold and other items will be available for purchase.

Guests can bring eye glasses, household batteries, CFL light bulbs, gently used shoes, bikes, cell phones, old ink cartridges, and water-based paints to dispose of at the event, too.
